Here are the darling little squash waiting for their stuffing. I was totally experimenting with this dish, but it turned out well. The filling was a mix of brown rice and orzo*, pine nuts, shiitakes sauteed with shallots and —this is the inspired part— blue cheese. (Because Rick and I don’t cook together unless there is cheese involved.) We stuffed some zucchini too.

*I used a box of Near East rice mix because I was at a tiny store and it was all they had. (and I’m bad at cooking rice, especially brown or wild.) If you do this— DO NOT add the “spice packet.” I did so against my better judgment and it tasted metallic, chemically, and super-salty. Next time I will use quinoa and spice it myself.

I awoke with a start and a scream in the middle of the night. This rarely happens, as I am not prone to scary dreams. M reminded me of it this morning and I remembered what I was screaming about- not creepy clowns, serial killers or ghouls— no, it was a giant roach flying towards my head. That’s the stuff of my nightmares.

I did NOT buy tickets for Death Cab at Radio City. I had the TM window open and everything. I wish I could say it feels good to practice restraint, but really I’m just convinced I’m going to be missing the best concert ever.

In the immortal words of M, “You can’t do everything, Loo.”

Because, truthfully, most times I am scowling. Gotta work on that.

Jump on this bandwagon here.  (via: everyone)

Getting a pedicure. The ladies next to me are talking about potty training, in depth. Sigh.

DOG FOR ADOPTION—my friend Jen is fostering this dog for a Basset rescue organization. I’ve met her at the dog run and she’s truly special. Please help spread the word so we can find her a forever home!

“Maggie is an adorable Basset Hound that was abandoned and taken to a kill shelter. She was rescued and we have been fostering her for the past couple weeks. I really can’t imagine why someone would dump her, she’s such a sweet dog.

We think Maggie is about 5 years old. She’s wonderful with people, loves affection and is good with other dogs (I haven’t had her around cats, so I’m not sure how she is with them.) It’s fun to watch her try to keep up with the other dogs at the run with her short stubby legs! She’s been great with kids of all ages and couldn’t be happier with the attention. Maggie is house-broken (she hasn’t had a single accident since I’ve had her), goes in her crate when told, and is learning to not pull on the leash. She really is a very sweet, happy dog and has a great personality. She’ll make a fantastic pet and will shower you with more love than you know what to do with.”

If you, or someone you know, is interested in giving her a home, please email me (or you can email adopt4paws@yahoo.com) and we can get you more information about the adoption process.

Seriously. How could someone abandon this baby?

text 15 Aug Storm

Apparently we are under a tornado watch?!  I love a good storm, but it’s interrupting Friday Yappy Hour at the dog run.

I have always found the transvestites to be peace-loving sorts. I’m baffled.

Dinner: Farm stand zucchini and tomato sauce on fresh Citarella fusilli.

It dawned on me when I initially tasted it that this sauce would make a nice soup, thinned down a bit and put through a fine mesh strainer, topped with a dollop of creme fraiche. There’s enought left to freeze. That might be its second life. (I defintely got the freezing food gene from my mom!  I hope she’s proud.)
